Detection of Vibrationally Excited Co in Irc+10216

چکیده
Using the Submillimeter Array we have detected the J = 3–2 and 2–1 rotational transitions from within the first vibrationally excited state of CO toward the extreme carbon star IRC+10216 (CW Leo). The emission remains spatially unresolved with an angular resolution of ∼ 2′′ and, given that the lines originate from energy levels that are ∼ 3100 K above the ground state, almost certainly originates from a much smaller (∼ 1014 cm) sized region close to the stellar photosphere. Thermal excitation of the lines requires a gas density of ∼ 109 cm−3, about an order of magnitude higher than the expected gas density based on previous infrared observations and models of the inner dust shell of IRC+10216.

A Submillimeter HCN Laser in IRC +10216.
We report the detection of a strong submillimeter-wavelength HCN laser line at a frequency near 805 GHz toward the carbon star IRC +10216. This line, the J=9-8 rotational transition within the (0400) vibrationally excited state, is one of a series of HCN laser lines that were first detected in the laboratory in the early days of laser spectroscopy. Since its lower energy level is 4200 K above t...
متن کاملNote 14 C in AGB stars : the case of IRC + 10216
Observations and stellar evolution computations have been dedicated to the search for 14 C in the archetype of AGB stars, IRC+10216/CW Leo. Contrary to Wright's (1994) tentative detection, we see no trace of 14 CO in this star down to a 3σ limit R = 13 CO/ 14 CO≥ 1400. The new limit is consistent with our stellar evolution computations, which indicate that R should be > 4000. Comparison of the ...
متن کاملSubmillimeter Narrow Emission Lines from the Inner Envelope of Irc+10216
A spectral-line survey of IRC+10216 in the 345 GHz band has been undertaken with the Submillimeter Array. Although not yet completed, it has already yielded a fairly large sample of narrow molecular emission lines with line-widths indicating expansion velocities of ∼4 km s, less than 3 times the well-known value of the terminal expansion velocity (14.5 km s) of the outer envelope. Five of these...

We report the detection of H2CO (formaldehyde) around the carbon-rich AGB star, IRC+10216. We find a fractional abundance with respect to molecular hydrogen of x(H2CO) = 1.3 +1.5 −0.8 × 10 . This corresponds to a formaldehyde abundance with respect to water vapor of x(H2CO)/x(H2O) = (1.1±0.2)×10 , in line with the formaldehyde abundances found in Solar System comets, and indicates that the puta...
متن کاملAstronomical detection of the cyanobutadiynyl radical C 5 N
We report the detection of the elusive carbon-chain radical C 5 N in the dark cloud TMC1 and its tentative detection in the circumstellar envelope IRC+10216. C 5 N appears to be two orders of magnitude less abundant than the related molecule HC 5 N and much less abundant than expected from current gas phase chemistry models. In comparison the HC 3 N to C 3 N abundance ratio is of the order of 1...
